Oman has signed agreements worth $11 billion for two new green hydrogen projects in Dhofar, following the completion of state hydrogen developer Hydrom’s second auction round. The signings bring Oman’s total planned hydrogen production to 1.38 million tonnes per year by 2030.
The first project, developed by a consortium of EDF Group, J-POWER and Yamna, targets about 178,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen by 2030, powered by roughly 4.5 GW of wind and solar with battery storage and a 2.5 GW electrolyser, feeding a 1 million tonne-per-year green ammonia plant in the Salalah Free Zone. The second, developed by Actis and Fortescue, could produce up to 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year from up to 4.5 GW of wind and solar, with output sold to local industrial offtakers and processed into ammonia for export via the Port of Salalah. The two projects together cover 682 square kilometres of land awarded by Hydrom, which says it has now awarded more than 2,300 square kilometres with investment commitments exceeding $49 billion.
