Sepco secures 500MW/2,000MWh Saudi BESS project contract

Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation (Sepco) has secured the Al Khushaybi Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Saudi Arabia, part of the kingdom’s Group 1 independent BESS tender and its first wave of large-scale battery-storage projects.

The project has a planned capacity of 500 MW / 2,000 MWh. It is being developed by a consortium of French energy major Engie and Saudi group Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co, with state-owned Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) as offtaker. Sepco, a major Chinese EPC contractor specialising in power generation and transmission infrastructure, will build the facility, designed to store energy during periods of lower demand and discharge it at peak times — improving grid stability and helping integrate growing volumes of solar and wind power under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 energy transition.
