Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Saudi-based ACWA Power have reached financial close on a 180 million imperial gallon per day (MIGD) seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant in Hassyan, Dubai, at an investment of US$920 million. The project is described as the world’s largest of its kind under the Independent Water Producer (IWP) model.

The plant is a key component of DEWA’s strategy to expand Dubai’s desalination capacity and supports Dubai’s plan to produce 100% of its desalinated water from a clean energy and waste-heat mix by 2030, under the Dubai Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy 2030. ACWA Power described Hassyan as the site of its first desalination plant fully powered by renewable energy.
